September Soups: Pasta e Fagioli Soup

Okay, this is happening… we made it to September! There are so many reasons to love September; crisp air, warm drinks, layering clothes, and SOUUPPPPPP! This is our 4th September Soup series and this year I decided to turn some of my favorite meals or ingredients into delicious soups. I’m so excited for you to read, save, cook, & devour the recipes I have in store for you!

We’re starting off with a meal that my Nana would always make for us on a cold fall or winter day. Pasta e Fagioli, meaning pasta and beans in Italian, is one of those meals that fills you up, keeps you warm, and seriously takes no time to make.


Pasta e Fagioli seems to be one of those dishes that varies a little from each family, some like it soupier, some like it with other veggies. We keep it simple in our kitchen.. pasta, beans, and sauce! Sooooo, as always, if this isn’t how your Nana makes it, take that up with her.. not me! byeeeeee!

Pasta e Fagioli Soup

2 tbsp olive oil

4 cloves garlic

3 - 15 oz cans cannellini beans

3 - 29oz cans hunts tomato sauce

1 lb ditalini pasta

salt/pepper/crushed red pepper to taste

  • boil water and cook pasta in separate pot

  • add olive oil, minced garlic and crushed red pepper to pan, sauté for 4-5 minutes on medium heat, add beans (not drained), add sauce, let simmer for at least 30 minutes, add salt and pepper to taste.

  • add pasta to bowl, add sauce and bean mixture to your liking.


It really couldn’t get any easier. You know how comforting a bowl of tomato soup is on a chilly night, imagine that, but with pasta and beans, too. We usually add a sprinkle of parmesan cheese but if you cut that out, this is vegan friendly, if that’s your thing!

If you’ve read any of my other recipe posts, you know I have a couple of lovely taste testers (my mum and sister) and this year I’ve recruited my niece Sienna as another mini taste tester. I’m happy to say they all approve! Even my Nana, who was kind enough to share her recipe with me, approved!
